Looking for a good news app. Tried Google News but it won't stop showing me politics and war. Any suggestions?

Main Post:

Google's News app constantly has a "Top News' section at the top, and it's exclusively war and politics stuff that I don't want to see. Anyone have any suggestions on a good news app I can use instead?

Top Comment: I use Feedly. You can follow a ton of different news/RSS feeds across a huge amount of topics and even group them together in categories. I have a category for my doom scrolling (aka politics/news), one for my work related feeds, one for my hobbies, one for deals (e.g. slickdeals) and browse through which ever category I feel like at the time. There's also a web version so you can browse one your laptop and/or phone.

Best news apps for global unbiased news? Preferably one that has a lot of filtering features. Thank you !

Top Comment: You are not thinking correctly There are no apps that can make your homework for you If you want to be truly informed, you need to consume on each piece of news many sources, and picking 4 or so will give you a very partial, usually western based if reddit recommendations are to be expected, and narrow view However, a baseline for news around the world is probably euronews and afronews, al Jazeera, the econonomist, the NYT, SCMP, Toi can be a good place to start But you'll realistically need significantly more sources than these, and installing that many apps... Idk, seems pointless, just have them as favorites in your searcher

The best multilingual news apps

Main Post:

I love Google News, but like most of the big news-aggregator apps, it only lets you have one region and language active at a time. I live in Sweden and get my news in Swedish, obviously, which is perfect for national news etc, but I'd like to get international (and specifically tech/Android) news in English and French as well, without having to add each source I can think of manually and checking each feed separately.

I'd really love to hear if anyone has found a better solution with a different app! I use Feedly already, but again, you can only get news from specified feeds.

Newtification is powered by Google News. After you set up your preferred countries/topics you can read them all together under "Latest News" or drill down by country/topic.

News apps need to "[provide] valid contact information for the news publisher"

Main Post:

Hey!

As you may know, Google has begun rolling out a new News Policy that that says all news apps must

  • provide adequate information about the news publisher and its contributors including clear ownership, and
  • have a website or in-app page that provides valid contact information for the news publisher.

I'm developing a Hacker News client meaning users submit links from whatever domain they choose and am interested in how other developers of similar clients have managed to solve this. I tried adding a section in my app where I link to the Hacker News legal page but that update was rejected for not providing valid contact information for the news publisher.

Yo, so I ran into this issue, too. Google's pretty vague about this for a reason, I think, maybe something about avoiding unverified news sources.

There's a pretty important identifier in all this. Is your app designed to to produce and distribute news, or simply aggregating it? An entire section of the Play store is devoted to news aggregators that don't claim to be their own news source, so long as it's obvious where the information is coming from.

Can someone recommend a good news app, one without "Top Stories" or other forced featured content at the top?

Main Post:

Getting sick of local news, top stories, trending stories, etc. before I can get to the "For You" section on Apple News.

I want a news app which only serves me content based on my recommendations and prior news views.

Thanks!

Top Comment: The best option is choose your own curated content sources. I strongly recommend Feedly

What's your favorite News app and why?

Main Post:

I've been looking into the different Android news apps that are out there, and I'm wondering what everyone thinks is the best news app they've found.

Personally, I've already tried:

  • Feedly
  • Inoreader
  • Flipboard
  • Google News
  • Microsoft Start

Personally I think the first two are the best, because they offer the most customizability of your feeds, so you can pay closer attention to what you want to see, and see less of what you don't care about.

But let me know what you think. What is your favorite news/feed reader app and why?

Top Comment: I use an app that's literally just called "News" from Fdroid. It's pretty basic, but that's what I like about it. They recently updated it to the new material design as well, so it's looks pretty native

Top iOS news app?

Main Post:

Noting that Apple News is not compatible with my region. Anyone knows an app that allows you to browse news per topic? Like for example, have tabs of different topics: Local, Business, Health, Entertainment, Sports...etc. and where I can easily add or remove topics according to my personal interest?

Tried flipped and google news, I didn’t like flipped at all, google news was okay but I had a hard time personalizing my feed. I’m asking Reddit for the sake of time.

Your contribution is highly appreciated.

Edit: Context: I recently quit social media apps and I’m looking for news apps to keep me informed and updated.

Top Comment: Reeder, the best RSS feed reader for both iOS and macOS.

What's a good free news app that brings news from multiple outlets?

Main Post:

I like AP and Reuters and Vice but I like them all to be in one place. I kind of want an alternative to twitter.

Top Comment:

Perhaps RSS feeds?
